Modern Uses Of Goji Berry

With the intensive research work done in recent years, Goji berries contain vitamins B1 and B6, and vitamin E, its contain more protein then whole wheat, 18 amino acids, 21 trace minerals (including significant amounts of zinc, iron, copper, calcium, selenium, phosphorus and germanium; a very rare anti-cancer agent almost never found in food), more beta carotene than carrots, more vitamin C than oranges, essential fatty acids and is the richest source of carotenoids of any food on the planet. Goji berries contain polysaccharides which fortify the immune system. A polysaccharide found in this fruit has been found to be a powerful secretagogue.  

 

The color components of goji fruit are a group of carotenoids. The predominant carotenoid is zeaxanthin, which is present mainly as zeaxanthin dipalmitate, comprising about one-third to one-half of the total carotenoids. Goji fruit is considered one of the best food sources of zeaxanthin. When ingested,  eaxanthin accumulates in fatty tissues, but especially in the macula, a region of the retina. It is believed that by having a good supply of this compound, the macula is protected from degeneration, which can be induced by excessive sun exposure (UV light) and by other “oxidative” processe.

Another component of lyceum is polysaccharides, chains of sugar molecules with high molecular weight (several hundred sugar molecules per chain). It’s one of the best things found in Goji Berries are the high level of polysaccharides. Studies have shown that polysaccharides are exceptional sources of the essential cell sugars necessary for proper immune function and intercellular communication. These polysaccharides can enhance health by maintaining normal cell growth and thus may help slow the aging process.
The amino-acid like substance betaine, which is related to the nutrient choline. In recent years, betaine has been included in some Western nutritional supplement products, especially those used for improving muscle mass, using several hundred milligrams for a daily dose. Betaine was shown to protect the livers of laboratory animals from the impact of toxic chemicals; other pharmacologic studies have shown that it is an anticonvulsant, sedative, and vasodilator.
